What Happened

In the bottom of the eighth inning of a tight game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants, a bizarre play unfolds that leaves Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo utterly bewildered. With two outs and a runner on base, the Giants' third baseman fields a fair ball down the line. The runner, Arizona's Christian Walker, rounds second base and takes off towards third, seemingly sensing an opportunity for an extra base. However, as Walker rounds the bag, he collides with the Giants' second baseman, who is standing in his path. Walker falls to the ground, crawling back towards first base in obvious pain. The umpires convene to discuss the play, with the third base umpire indicating that he saw obstruction by the second baseman, which should award Walker second base. Lovullo, unaware of the umpire's call, becomes increasingly agitated, insisting that he has "never seen a play like this" in his life. He demands that the umpires consult with the league office in New York to clarify the ruling, repeatedly questioning whether the second baseman had actually signaled obstruction. Lovullo's frustration boils over and he is ultimately ejected from the game for his outburst. After the game, Lovullo admits that he was mistaken and that the umpires had made the correct call. "I got it wrong," he says. "I just didn't know at the time. It just didn't add up." He acknowledges that he missed the third base umpire's signal for obstruction, which led to his heated reaction on the field. Despite the confusion, the umpires' decision to award Walker second base stands and the Diamondbacks and Giants continue their tightly contested game. Lovullo's honesty in admitting his mistake is a testament to his professionalism and commitment to the sport, even in the heat of a competitive moment.

And then he's on the ground, so they throw it to second base. No one seemed to call anything and they just called for the trainer. And then the Giants third base coach is going to the umpire at second and he's like, "Well, I don't know. I didn't see." He's like, "I don't I don't have a view." He's like, "I'm going to ask."
