Umpire immediately ejects Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner after a calm complaint, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of an ongoing baseball game, Chicago Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner steps up to the plate. The Cubs currently trail by one run, adding to the high-stakes tension of the moment. Hoerner takes the first pitch, which is called a ball by the home plate umpire. On the next offering, Hoerner fouls the ball off, bringing the count to 2-2. It's at this point that the game takes an unexpected turn. The umpire's next call is a strike, which Hoerner appears to calmly dispute, saying "You're having a really bad day so far." However, the umpire immediately ejects Hoerner from the game, much to the surprise of both the player and Cubs manager David Ross, who rushes out to argue the ejection. "Your day just ended," the umpire tells Hoerner sternly, despite the infielder's relatively mild tone. Hoerner repeatedly tries to explain himself, saying "I just said you're having a really bad day so far," but the umpire refuses to back down, insisting that Hoerner cannot speak to him in that manner. The crowd erupts in an ovation, seemingly siding with Hoerner and disapproving of the umpire's quick trigger in ejecting the player. Ross continues to plead Hoerner's case, arguing that the comment did not warrant such a harsh punishment. "You gotta be shitting me," Ross says in disbelief. "I heard you, I understand that, but he's not gonna say that to me." According to the umpire, he has made 78 pitches so far in the game, and two of the five missed calls have gone against Hoerner. This context helps explain the infielder's frustration with the umpire's performance, even if his language was relatively tame. Ultimately, the umpire stands firm in his decision, ejecting Hoerner from the game despite the player's calm demeanor and the manager's passionate objections. The moment underscores the ongoing tensions between players, coaches, and officials in the high-stakes world of professional baseball.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentnico horner got ejected for saying something in a rather nice and pleasant tone so let's get into
it this breakdown is brought to you by shady rays flirty on the bump runner on second first pitch
inside called the ball he likes that good start oh down the middle wanted to drive that didn't
one and one's the count away two and one curveball wanted to smoke that way ahead of it gets it
foul 2-2 now and this is the pitch that causes problems it's inside it's called the strike
we have the audio of this first line and this is what it sounds like
he said you're having a really bad day so far and the umpire said
your day just ended oh i said you're having a really bad day so far uh
uh
you're having a really bad day so far uh
you're having a really bad day so far uh
yeah you can't you can't say that to me so if anyone doesn't know the unwritten rules about
ejections once you use the word you and make it personal umpires eject you so even though he used
a very calm voice it is a known thing i mean ridiculous or not i'm not backing backing this
it is somewhat ridiculous at times there should be nuance to it but the unwritten code is that
and that's what he said he said you're having a really bad day so far
and that is what shocked him counsel comes running out because he couldn't protect his player he's
upset and uh you know a player just horner just repeats it over and over again i just said you're
having what are you doing i said you're having a really bad day so far doing what are you doing
that's nothing derek you gotta be you're having a really bad day so far
i hear you i understand that but he's not gonna say that to me you can't fuck games like that
fucking grow up you gotta be shitting me i said again i heard you i heard you we're done
i understand what you're saying you don't throw the player out don't throw he can't say that to
me he didn't say shit to you all right we're done he did not talk shit to you i mean you
gotta be kidding me you're better than that you're better than that be fucking better
you've thrown people out like that too many fucking times don't do that do not fucking do that
do not fucking do that and he's on his way and he gets an ovation from the crowd that was a quick
hook it was a quick hook umpire says have i really had a bad day what's going on
he
made 78 calls so when uh when the batter swings it's out of his hands so 78 pitches thus far
the batter had not swung at means he has to call is that a ball or a strike
of those 78 some aren't close some are very easy some he got wrong four he got this one wrong it
was low and he called it a strike he got this one wrong it was a strike high he called it a ball
according to the system this one low he called it a strike and also this one inside called it a strike
now the interesting thing that's also nico horner so of the five missed calls thus far two have been
on nico horner so it does make sense that nico horner is turning around saying you're having a
bad game you're having a real bad game so far because from his experience that's kind of in
the case all the pitches that he didn't swing at the first one called a strike wasn't a strike
the next one low but i don't think you're gonna mess that up
that one up high i don't think you're gonna mess that one up this one okay he didn't mess that one
up and that's kind of the one he called so you know you're one for four but couple that one isn't
even like you know umpire makes the call but anyone can do it and then this one also incorrectly
called so of these six pitches nico horner left in the umpire's hands two of them he botched so
it does make sense from nico horner's perspective you're having a real bad game so far i guess
what's the one that's going to mess that one up this one okay he didn't mess that one up and that's
the way you phrase that without saying the word you let me know in the comments how do you phrase
that and not say the word you tough game so far is that is that is that allowed i don't know the
actual rules thank you to shady rays for sponsoring this episode 35 off coming your way when you use
