The Cubs Run into two outs on one play, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the second inning, the Chicago Cubs find themselves down by one run with the bases loaded and only one out. The team is looking to capitalize on this scoring opportunity and even up the game. However, the situation takes an unexpected turn when the pitcher steps up to the plate. Javy Báez, the Cubs' talented infielder, is leading off from third base, poised to score the tying run. The pitcher attempts a safety squeeze bunt, but is unable to make contact with the ball. This results in a bizarre sequence of events, as Báez is caught in a rundown between third base and home plate. As Báez retreats towards third, his teammate Willson Contreras, the Cubs' catcher, tries to follow him in an attempt to advance the runners. Contreras is also tagged out and the Cubs end up with two outs on a single play, squandering their scoring chance. Cubs manager Joe Maddon immediately challenges the call on Contreras, believing he may have been safe. The replay shows that Contreras' hand did indeed reach the base before the tag, but the umpires maintain their initial ruling. Maddon chooses not to pursue a formal challenge, perhaps to avoid further delay and instead focus on teaching his players a lesson about proper baserunning. "I'm not sure why you can't challenge that," says Cubs catcher Willson Contreras, visibly frustrated with the missed opportunity. "I think he was safe. You can see his hand on the base before the glove gets there." Despite the disappointment, the Cubs remain determined to mount a comeback and even the score. The team's resilience and the manager's willingness to use this moment as a learning experience will be crucial as they continue to battle for the lead.
