The Braves and Padres brawl multiple times in one game back in 1984, a breakdown

What Happened

The Braves and Padres engage in a heated, bench-clearing brawl multiple times during their game in 1984. The conflict begins when Braves pitcher Pascual Perez hits Padres outfielder Alan Wiggins with the first pitch of the game, apparently in retaliation for Wiggins bunting for hits the previous day. Tensions continue to escalate as the teams try to retaliate against each other, with multiple pitchers and managers getting ejected. Perez and Wiggins are at the center of the conflict, with Perez dancing around the batter's box and wielding his helmet as a potential weapon when the Padres try to hit him. Eventually, Perez is plunked by a pitch and gets ejected along with the Padres manager. A large brawl erupts, with players and even a fan getting involved in the melee. Padres veteran Champ Summers, a 28-year-old former Army Vietnam veteran, charges over to the Braves dugout looking for Perez, but gets tackled by Braves player Bob Horner, who had suited up from the press box to join the fray. The fans also get involved, with one throwing a cup of liquid and another attempting a double-leg takedown. Another scuffle breaks out and Braves third baseman Greg Nettles gets hit by a pitch and charges the mound, leading to more fighting. Nettles' former Yankees teammate, Chris Chambliss, tries to calm him down. Braves outfielder Claudell Washington delivers a hard-hitting punch to reliever Goose Gossage. The brawls continue for several more minutes, with a total of 17 players and 4 managers getting ejected and 4 fans arrested. Even after the game, the drama continues, with Braves coach Ed Winfield angrily confronting fans from the dugout, shirtless and wielding a bat, as they throw objects into the dugout. A final fan rushes the field and gets tackled by security as players watch in amusement. By the end, it's clear that the longstanding rivalry between these two teams has reached a boiling point, resulting in a wild, chaotic scene unlike anything typically seen on a baseball diamond.
