A's win the season opener with a walk off grand slam, a breakdown
What Happened
The Oakland Athletics are hosting the season opener against an unnamed opponent. In the bottom of the extra inning, Simeon is placed on second base as the winning run under the new extra-inning rules. Laureano steps up to the plate and has a brief exchange with the pitcher, who says something Laureano can't repeat. Laureano is then hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Athletics slugger Chris Davis. Manager Bob Melvin jogs out to the mound to make a pitching change, bringing in right-hander Hobie Miller, who is making his 2020 season debut after spending last year in the minors. On the first pitch he sees, the 29-year-old Miller crushes a towering grand slam to right field, winning the game for the Athletics in dramatic fashion. The Athletics dugout erupts in celebration as Miller's mammoth home run clears the wall. Even the security guard in the outfield stops to admire the shot. The catcher, unfazed, simply turns and walks away as the ball sails over the fence. After rounding the bases, Miller is met by a Gatorade bath courtesy of teammate Tony Kemp. Kemp admits he didn't execute the Gatorade shower perfectly, saying "I should have just gone straight up." Laureano, meanwhile, is seen celebrating animatedly, having apparently killed a squirrel with his earlier hit-by-pitch. The walk-off grand slam gives the Athletics a thrilling season-opening victory in extra innings. Miller's heroics spark a raucous celebration, capping off an exciting start to the new campaign for the A's.
