The Chiefs looked like they had pulled off one of the wildest plays of the season. Down by three with just over a minute left, Patrick Mahomes hit Travis Kelce, who shook off defenders and tossed a lateral to Kadarius Toney. Toney had a clear lane and scored what could’ve been the game-winning touchdown. The crowd went nuts, Chiefs sideline celebrated, and even Josh Allen looked rattled. But then came the flag. Offensive offsides on Toney. Play wiped off the board. No touchdown.
Mahomes lost it. He couldn’t understand how an offside call on a wide receiver, totally away from the action, could negate a play like that. The refs explained Toney lined up so deep in the neutral zone he was blocking their view of the ball. No warning was given because it wasn’t even close. Replay showed Toney clearly offside. Still, Mahomes and the Chiefs were furious. They faced second and 15 instead. Mahomes dodged a sack, somehow got the ball out, but the next two downs didn’t go anywhere. On fourth and 15, the pass was batted down. Chiefs turned it over. Game over.
On the sideline, Mahomes exploded. Teammates had to calm him down as he shouted that it was the worst call he’s ever seen. The Bills took a knee and walked away with the win. The Chiefs walked away feeling robbed.
