Western Michigan pulled off an unlikely comeback win over Toledo in a game that turned chaotic in the final minutes. Toledo led 31-28 with three and a half minutes left and faced a fourth-and-11. Instead of kicking a field goal, they went for it. A risky pass to the running back turned into a first down by inches. The spot was so close, the refs used a bent marker to measure it. Next play, Toledo punched in a touchdown and took a 10-point lead. But Western Michigan wasn’t done.
They started picking apart Toledo’s defense, especially cornerbacks wearing numbers 0 and 45. Quick reads, easy throws, same side of the field. Those players got targeted over and over. Then disaster struck for Toledo. Western Michigan scored fast, then missed the extra point, forcing them to recover an onside kick to stay alive. They did. Number 16 dribbled one up the middle, and number 39 dove in to secure it after it bounced past another player. With new life, WMU kept going at Toledo’s weak spots. Eventually, quarterback number 5 hit number 1 deep. That set up a fake spike play that didn’t even need to be tricked—Toledo just lost coverage. Number 11 slipped to the outside alone and scored for the win.
Western Michigan’s coach sent the kicker back out for an extra point, and the same guy who missed before nailed it to go up by 3. Toledo had one last shot but threw an interception, sealing the game. WMU’s sideline went wild after a comeback that had everything: a blown lead, a successful onside kick, a fake spike, and a complete defensive collapse by Toledo.
