Thompson pulled off an insane comeback in the Alabama 7A state championship against Auburn. Down 28-13 in the fourth quarter and missing their starting quarterback, things looked bad. Auburn had just grabbed an interception and started celebrating what seemed like a sure win. But they got conservative, took knees with more time on the clock than they could burn, and gave Thompson a shot. Thompson blocked a late punt and returned it for a touchdown, then hit the extra point to trim the lead to two with 18 seconds left.
Auburn made another mistake on the onside kick. They left the play wide open, and Thompson easily recovered. A couple of pass interference calls moved Thompson into field goal range, and the backup quarterback set them up with a deep throw. The kicker came on with the season on the line and hit the go-ahead field goal. Five minutes earlier the team was crying and hugging, thinking their season was done. Now they were state champs. Auburn handed the game away with strange decisions late, and Thompson took full advantage.
