Arizona State and Texas delivered a wild playoff game that ended in double overtime and had everything from trick plays to late-game heroics. Down 24-8 with eight minutes left, ASU’s Cam Scadboo flipped the game on its head. First he took a toss on fourth down and threw a 42-yard touchdown. Then he caught a 62-yard pass on the next drive. He followed that up by running in a short touchdown and converting the two-point attempt to tie the game. In just three minutes, Scadboo accounted for more yards than the entire Texas offense.
Texas had a chance to win it with a 48-yard field goal but missed wide right. ASU got the ball and nearly set up the game-winner before a false start and some missed passes stalled the drive. A controversial no-call on a clear helmet-to-helmet hit fired up the Sun Devils crowd as the game went to overtime. In the first OT, ASU punched it in with Scadboo again leading the charge. They held Texas to fourth and long, but then collapsed in coverage and gave up a shocking touchdown. Texas hit the extra point to tie.
Second overtime started with a quick Texas score and a successful two-point conversion. ASU needed one more rally, but after a couple of stuffed runs and pressure on the quarterback, the final throw was picked off. Game over. Texas advances. Scadboo left it all on the field with touchdowns throwing, catching, and rushing. The game had it all—momentum swings, blown leads, officiating drama, and a crowd losing its mind. Texas escaped, barely. ASU fell short, but not without a fight.
