The Yankees and Orioles played a sloppy, mistake-filled game in Baltimore that somehow still turned into an entertaining finish. It started with Cameron Maybin misjudging a fly ball he usually catches, and just got uglier from there. The Orioles handed out free bases with multiple hit-by-pitches and botched routine plays. A misthrow on a DJ LeMahieu grounder and poor decision-making by Rougned Odor in the outfield kept extending innings and giving the Yankees chances. The defense on both sides looked lost. One pop-up to second should’ve ended a rally, but miscommunication and a dropped catch allowed runners to advance.
Later, Maybin bluffed a tag on a fly ball and scored off one of the worst throws home you’ll see from a left fielder. DJ LeMahieu took third on the same play. The Orioles had another chance later to get out of an inning, but a second brutal throw from right field came up way offline and soft. The chaos continued with a pop-up to the catcher that should’ve ended a tie game in the ninth. Instead, the catcher missed it, walked the next batter, and Gary Sanchez crushed a three-run homer to give the Yankees the lead. Even with a chance to turn a double play and stop the momentum, the Yankees kicked it around again, but somehow they held on for the win. Both teams looked lost in the field, but the Yankees’ bats bailed them out in the end.
