Lance Lynn pitched his way out of multiple jams before getting tossed in what might be the softest ejection of the year. He worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the third using a mix of cutters and sinkers that looked sharp and under control. After getting the final out in the fourth, Lynn walked toward the dugout for the routine sticky stuff check. When the umpire didn’t meet him at the foul line, Lynn left his glove and hat on the railing and headed to the clubhouse, possibly for treatment or just a quick break.
As he was walking off, the umpire called for his belt. Lynn gently tossed it back toward the railing, clearly not in frustration or anger. The belt landed off the railing, not even near the ump, but that was enough for an ejection. Lynn came back out confused and frustrated, telling the ump he appreciated knowing how sensitive he was, and walked off. Even Tony La Russa couldn’t make sense of it all, stammering through a non-answer when asked to comment. Lynn was in control, pitching well, and then got thrown out over one of the most harmless gestures possible. It’s hard to see any justification for tossing him other than bruised ego.
