Padres rookie pitcher Chris Paddack had a rough outing against the Mets, and things got heated fast. He faced Pete Alonso early and showed some clear frustration over a missed fastball location. There was some past drama between the two over Rookie of the Month, which might’ve added tension. Paddack looked annoyed after walking Alonso and didn’t like the strike zone. Next up was Robinson Cano, who had already homered off him earlier. Paddack tried to psych himself up, even burying his face in his glove between pitches. It worked briefly as he got a couple strike calls, but then he tried to get fancy with a breaking ball, and Cano crushed it for his second homer of the night.
Later in the inning, Paddack aimed for a high fastball against another hitter, got the call he wanted, then went even higher on the next one, but it got smacked for a base hit. That was the end of his night. His manager pulled him, and Paddack stewed in the dugout, still upset with the earlier walk and the ump’s call. Meanwhile, the reliever who came in offered no glove show, despite fans pleading to see it. Cano wasn’t done either, hitting yet another homer later in the game, finishing with three on the night. Paddack eventually cooled off and watched the rest from the bench. It was a tough night all around for the rookie.
