The Angels and Mariners were tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth. Albert Pujols reached base, so the Angels brought in Goodwin to pinch run. With one out, Justin Bour came to the plate and swung at an 0-2 pitch. He made contact, but didn’t hustle down the line. Meanwhile, the Mariners executed a smart defensive play. Dee Gordon faked out Goodwin with a deke at second, convincing him to slide. Then Gordon and the second baseman coordinated to let the ball drop on purpose. They trusted each other, baited the baserunners, and turned a sneaky double play.
Goodwin got caught too far off second when the ball dropped. The Mariners got him and then easily tossed out Bour, who hadn’t run hard. The communication on the field was smooth for everyone except the shortstop, who hesitated for a moment before making the final throw. Bour looked stunned. He knew he blew it. Fans of both teams had opposite reactions, though both looked equally confused on camera. Angels manager Brad Ausmus couldn’t believe it, and Bour looked furious with himself.
