Jose Alvarez took the mound for the Phillies and quickly found himself in one of the worst situations a pitcher can face. On a 1-0 pitch, he fielded a 105 mph line drive that went straight into his groin. Somehow, he still managed to make the out, but immediately dropped to the ground in visible pain. Trainers came out but couldn’t offer much help without making the situation worse. They called for the cart and got Alvarez off the field.
He was diagnosed with a testicular contusion and placed on the injured list. Alvarez later confirmed it was a painful but not serious injury. He went to the hospital, got checked out, and thankfully didn’t suffer any long-term damage. The Phillies and fans breathed a sigh of relief. While it was a brutal moment, Alvarez’s toughness stood out. The play was impressive, the pain very real, but he’s recovering well.
