Every Met forgot how many outs there were, a breakdown

In a bizarre moment during the sixth inning, the entire Mets defense forgot how many outs there were. The inning began with a routine popout to left field, caught by Tim Locastro. That made one out. Then Logan O’Hoppe worked a walk, putting a man on first with one out. Next, a ground ball to third triggered a clean 5-4-3 double play. That should’ve ended the inning.

But nobody on the field realized it. Pete Alonso stayed on the field. The middle infielders didn’t budge. Even the pitcher hung around, looking confused. The catcher finally got it, shrugged, and started walking off. In the outfield, Locastro — the same guy who caught the first out — looked just as lost. Not one defender seemed to remember he’d caught an out earlier in the inning.

It looked like all the players were relying on the scoreboard, which apparently never registered that first out. But none of them corrected it, not even Locastro. Buck Showalter looked annoyed in the dugout. His catcher tried to explain, but Buck wasn’t having it. Everyone blew it. The Mets pulled off a clean double play and still managed to look sloppy.
