In July 1985, Buck Martinez was behind the plate for the Blue Jays in a wild game against Seattle. With a 3-2 count and a runner on second, the batter hit a grounder through the infield, sending the runner home. The play at the plate turned brutal. The runner charged through Buck, who made the tag but suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle in the collision. Despite the injury, Buck stayed in the play. As the runner tried to take third, Buck, sitting on the ground, threw from his backside to third base. The throw went wide, setting up a second play at the plate.
Incredibly, Martinez stayed involved. While he couldn’t move much, he caught a throw from the outfield and tagged out a second runner trying to score. With no mobility and a shattered leg, he still managed to make two outs at home in one sequence. It was one of the toughest plays in MLB history. Buck didn’t play another game that year but returned in 1986.
