Both teams miss home plate in the same game, a breakdown

The Cardinals and Marlins had a weird one in St. Louis full of missed bases and botched home plate touches. In the second inning, Adam Duvall tried to score on a single to center but was ruled out at the plate. Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright saw it coming and yelled to Yadier Molina to tag Duvall, who thought he slid in safely. Marlins manager Don Mattingly challenged the play, saying Molina was blocking the plate without possession of the ball. But after review, the call stood. The umpires ruled Molina gave Duvall a lane, and the throw beat him cleanly.

Then the Cardinals had their own misfire. Down a run in the next inning, they ripped a double into the gap and sent a runner from first. The throw home was on time, but no tag was needed—the runner never touched home plate. He tried to duck around the catcher and lost track of where his foot landed. He claimed he touched it, but replay showed otherwise. Never even grazed the plate. Another failed challenge, another out. Two plays at the plate, no runs, and nobody touching home. A strange game where even clean hits and good speed didn’t get you anywhere if you missed the last step.
