In Game 3 of the NLCS, the Diamondbacks pulled off a wild bottom of the ninth to walk it off and even the series. Craig Kimbrel came in for the Phillies with the game tied 1-1 and quickly found himself in trouble. A borderline pitch was called a ball to start the inning, setting the tone for a frustrating strike zone. He then walked the leadoff batter after missing low on a full count. Arizona stole second to take away the double play, then a soft grounder put runners on the corners with no outs. Kimbrel managed to get a huge out at home on a grounder with the infield in, thanks to a sharp play from Turner.
With two outs, Kimbrel looked like he might escape. But he lost the next batter trying to get him to chase sliders and loaded the bases. That set the stage for Ketel Marte. Kimbrel started him off with a fastball up and in that Marte took. He went upstairs again and this time Marte was ready, lining a single into center to win it. Marte’s walk-off hit swung the momentum Arizona’s way and kept them alive in the series. The Phillies had chances, but Arizona capitalized better in the final frame.
