Chris Woodward gets ejected by Ángel Hernández, a breakdown

Chris Woodward got tossed for the first time as a manager, and it came at the hands of Angel Hernandez. The tension started after a questionable play at the plate. A deep hit off the Green Monster led to a tight tag at home, and the Rangers wanted to challenge the out call. Umpires usually allow a little slack when managers ask for time to review, but Angel gave them nothing. As soon as the timer ran out, he shut it down, saying they were too late to ask for a challenge.

Woodward lost it. He pointed out how in a similar situation days earlier in Oakland, the umpires gave them more time. He said multiple umps had told him the same thing before, that there’s some leniency. Angel didn’t care. He said it was already at zero. When Woodward kept pushing, Hernandez gave him a warning, then tossed him seconds later. Woodward exploded, calling it all a mess and saying they’d had plenty of talks about this issue with the umpiring crew. After getting tossed, he handed over his lineup card with a sarcastic “you’ll need this.” Turns out, the replay confirmed the runner was out anyway, but the frustration was more about inconsistency from the umpiring crew than the actual call.
