Bob Melvin got tossed again, his third ejection of the season and second in less than two weeks. It started late in a tight game. With two outs and the count 2-2, Matt Olson stood in with runners on. Pitcher Yarbrough dropped in a two-seamer that looked low, but the ump rang him up to end the inning. Next frame, the Rays had runners on again, and Austin Meadows came up in a 1-0 count. The next pitch landed in a similar spot to the Olson strike but this time got called a ball.
That inconsistency pushed Melvin over the edge. He began yelling from the dugout and was tossed almost immediately. Melvin claimed he wasn’t even yelling at the ump at first. Once ejected, he let loose, accusing the ump of missing five calls in the strike zone and handing one to the other team. He walked off without much more fuss, but the message was clear. The zone had wavered too much, and Melvin had seen enough.
