The Dodgers put together a huge inning sparked by a string of hits off reliever Derek Holland. Cody Bellinger started it with a grounder through the shift. Max Muncy followed with another hit in almost the same spot. With runners on first and third, David Freese grounded into a fielder’s choice to bring in the first run. Chris Taylor dropped one into right to make it two. Austin Barnes followed with a hit up the middle to bring home another. Then Kyle Garlick walked to load the bases, forcing the Giants to bring in Trevor Gott.
Gott missed badly with a fastball, then served up another that Enrique Hernández drove into left field to clear the bases. The Dodgers bench erupted, with teammates celebrating and Clayton Kershaw fired up. Hernández did a little dance and handed off his elbow guard on the way back to the dugout. The camera caught Giants catcher Buster Posey setting up unusually late, suggesting the pitch might have missed its intended spot. Based on the sequence, it looked like Gott aimed down the middle when the pitch was supposed to be inside. Hernández didn’t miss his chance and punished the mistake. The pitcher couldn’t even bring himself to watch the replay.
