Rizzo gets called out via fan interference, a breakdown

Anthony Rizzo came to the plate with two men on, hoping to chip away at a 3-0 deficit. The first pitch was outside. Then he fouled one into foul territory, but a fan reached for the ball, interfering with a possible catch. The umpiring crew reviewed it, ruled fan interference, and called Rizzo out. Replay made it look like the fielder had a real shot at making the catch if the fan hadn’t gotten in the way. Rizzo was clearly frustrated and wanted answers. He lost a chance to drive in runs and wasn’t quiet about it.

Things briefly heated up. Rizzo was ticked off, and Contreras and Schwarber stepped in to keep the situation under control. Contreras got animated, doing some exaggerated body movements while telling everyone he had it covered. Emotions cooled eventually, but not before the frustration boiled over a bit.

The moment went viral mostly because of the fan’s visible panic and Rizzo’s unfiltered reaction. The kid’s leg was visibly shaking, and it looked like he was worried about the fallout. Meanwhile, Rizzo just wanted his RBIs back.
