Things got heated between the Mets and Phillies after Pete Alonso took a hit by pitch from Jake Arrieta, followed by Todd Frazier getting plunked with a changeup. It was the fourth pitch thrown dangerously inside, and Frazier had enough. Though it wasn’t clearly intentional, tensions escalated. The umpire issued warnings to both benches, which frustrated Frazier since it meant the Mets couldn’t respond if they felt it was deliberate. Frazier kept arguing and was ejected for disputing a warning, which umpires don’t allow. He tossed his helmet and stomped off, confused and angry.
Not long after, Arrieta hit Amed Rosario with another off-speed pitch, and Mets manager Mickey Callaway lost it. He demanded Arrieta be tossed, citing Frazier’s earlier ejection and the prior warning. The umpire didn’t see it as intentional and left Arrieta in the game. Callaway was furious, arguing that both teams should be treated equally if the warning was going to stick. The back-and-forth continued with players and coaches visibly frustrated.
Despite the drama, backup catcher Tomás Nido came through big. He hit a clutch double to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs, flipping the momentum back to the Mets. He celebrated on second base and fired up the dugout. The game had started messy but ended with Nido playing hero.
