Things got heated late in a Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks game after a weird sequence involving a check swing and a disputed hit-by-pitch call. A ball appeared to either graze the knob of the bat or clip the batter’s hand. The batter insisted it hit him, while the pitcher thought he was faking it. Replay wasn’t conclusive, so the call on the field stood. The delay annoyed the pitcher, who looked ready to move on. Justin Turner then lined out and Will Smith struck out to end the game, with Diamondbacks pitcher Archie Bradley letting the Dodgers bench know he heard the chirping throughout. He pointed and shouted back at them as he walked off, clearly fired up. Some Dodgers players jumped the railing, then benches and bullpens slowly emptied.
Russell Martin was especially animated, standing near the front acting like he might do something, though nothing major came from it. The oddest moment came when Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray appeared on the field wearing a sweatshirt and shorts. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts seemed to think he was a staff member and got heated, yelling at him to leave the field. It wasn’t until someone told Roberts it was a player that he backed off, still confused why a player looked like he just rolled out of the clubhouse. Tensions eventually cooled with no punches thrown, but there was plenty of shouting and weird energy to close out the night.
