During a tense round of disc golf at the championship level, Finnish player Väinö Mäkelä (referred to as “Yalle” in the commentary) pulled off one of the most impressive shots of the day on the 13th hole. The hole is a long par 5 that forces players to cross water multiple times and stay tight along the shore. Mäkelä came into the hole at three over par and wasn’t having his best round, but that changed with one massive throw. After a solid setup shot, he launched a blind approach that soared over the trees and nailed the basket for an eagle. From where he stood, he couldn’t even see the basket, but the disc found its mark.
Gary Patton, who was in better shape at even par before the hole, had the chance to maintain a clean score, but things quickly unraveled. After matching throws early on, he missed his approach and went out of bounds. It snowballed from there, and Patton ended up with a double bogey. That dropped him below Mäkelä on the scorecard, flipping the narrative between the two. What began as a tough round for Mäkelä turned into a highlight moment, while Patton watched his steady play slip away in just one hole.
