Quarterback runs backwards for an intentional safety, a breakdown

Louisiana and App State played a wild one that turned chaotic thanks to some brutal long snapping. Louisiana was up 24-17 when their long snapper, number 49, fired off three straight high snaps, all sailing over the punter’s head. The third one ended in a safety, cutting the lead to five and forcing Louisiana to improvise. After that, they clearly gave up on the idea of punting for the rest of the game. On a later fourth down, instead of going for it from their own territory, Louisiana took an intentional safety to flip the field. That made it a three-point game with under two minutes left, handing App State good field position near midfield.

App State marched down the field quickly, converting a couple third downs. After a deep shot drew defensive pass interference, they found themselves at the 13-yard line with 14 seconds left. Two quick throws into the end zone came up empty. One was nearly caught but ruled out of bounds. Facing fourth down, the kicker had a chance to send it to overtime but shanked it badly, sealing the win for Louisiana. The decision to take the safety nearly backfired but in the end, the Cajuns escaped with the win despite losing their long snapper and nearly losing their minds.
