The Yankees and Guardians played a wild one in the Bronx. Down a run in the ninth, Josh Donaldson drew a leadoff walk off Emmanuel Clase. Tim Locastro pinch-ran and immediately stole second. With two out, Isiah Kiner-Falefa roped a two-strike pitch off the wall. Locastro scored to tie the game, but left fielder Steven Kwan ran full speed into the fence trying to make the catch. He stayed down for a bit and came up with cuts on his face. Some fans in the left field seats began taunting him while he was still hurt. Guardians outfielders Oscar Mercado and Myles Straw weren’t having it. Straw climbed the fence to confront people. Mercado pointed out fans to umpires and explained after the game that yelling at an injured player crossed the line.
Glaber Torres then came up with one out and delivered a pinch-hit single to win it for the Yankees. But as the team celebrated, fans started throwing beer cans and bottles at Guardians players. Mercado got hit with one and caught another midair. The chaos continued with about 20 cans and bottles flying in from the stands. One even hit an umpire. Fans mocked Mercado with hand signs and verbal taunts. Some players, including Rizzo, Cole, Judge, and Stanton, ran out to calm the situation. The moment should’ve belonged to Torres, but it turned into an ugly scene. Security and several Yankees players had to defuse the mess while protecting the Guardians from further harassment. The win was completely overshadowed.
