The Dodgers and Phillies delivered a wild finish in extra innings, full of smart, weird, and sloppy defense. In the bottom of the 10th, with J.T. Realmuto starting on second as the ghost runner, the Phillies hit a weak grounder that resulted in some chaos. Realmuto got aggressive and tried to advance to third but was baited into stepping off the bag by a sneaky fake from Justin Turner, who pretended to lose the ball after collecting Freddie Freeman’s throw. Realmuto got tagged out, and his own third base coach nearly ran into the play trying to warn him. Despite the coach’s effort, Realmuto fell for it.
Later, the Phillies kept pushing. Roman Quinn singled and took second on a throw to third from Mookie Betts. That gave the Phillies the winning run in scoring position with two outs. Alec Bohm then worked a tough at-bat, laying off a sharp slider and finally putting the ball in play. Max Muncie came up to field a routine grounder but bobbled it just enough for Quinn to sprint home from second and score. The Phillies won on hustle and a defensive miscue, erasing the earlier mistake on the bases. Realmuto went from goat to grateful, and Quinn’s alert baserunning made the difference.
