Padres talk to Profar after he allows runner to advance, a breakdown

In the bottom of the sixth between the Padres and Marlins, Miguel Rojas turned a misplayed ball into a triple, thanks to a breakdown in the Padres’ defense. Rojas hammered a hanging slider off the wall, and Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar fielded it cleanly, but hesitated on the throw. Instead of tossing it back in, Profar motioned toward shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, who had gone to cover second base instead of third. That hesitation gave Rojas time to take third, despite the ball beating him there. The throw was late, the tag slower, and the Marlins had a runner in scoring position.

Kim had positioned himself for a play at second even though the double was a given and the real play was at third. Profar’s delay, possibly a mix of frustration and confusion over Kim’s positioning, cost the Padres. Right after, Jacob Stallings punched a grounder up the middle to drive in Rojas, a run that might not have scored if Rojas had been held at second.

The dugout reaction was immediate. Manny Machado and Joe Musgrove gave Profar some firm feedback, and Soto stepped in to calm it down. Profar admitted his mistake later, saying it was a mental lapse and taking full responsibility. Musgrove, who had the run charged to him, accepted the apology and the team moved on. The moment showed some solid locker room leadership and chemistry, even if the play itself was a mess.
