Best Baseball Breakdowns of 2022, a breakdown compilation

Austin Davis enters with the bases loaded and a chance to escape with one out. He induces a pop-up from Copp but Verdugo misplays it, misreading it off the bat and allowing the ball to fall behind him. That sets up more chaos. A potential inning-ending double play is overturned at first base, and Logan Morrison loses it, tossing his glove, flipping his shoe, and yelling at the umpires before getting ejected. Further ump drama follows when Madison Bumgarner gets a bizarre hand check for sticky stuff, where the ump never looks at his hand and just stares into his eyes while rubbing it. Bumgarner calls him out and gets tossed too.

Then things veer into absurd. A routine fly ball gets lost in the sky by Arroyo, who’s clearly not comfortable in the outfield. Christian Arroyo flails awkwardly as the ball drops nowhere near him. Later, James Karinchak repeatedly goes to his hair and rosin bag, which frustrates Twins manager Rocco Baldelli enough to force the umpires to check for foreign substances. The umps indulge him in a check that involves hat grabbing, belt adjustments, and borderline petting.

There’s also a four-strike at-bat that no one notices, including the crowd, players, and all four umpires. Gary Sánchez makes a textbook tag at the plate, but replay overturns the call. Baldelli loses it again, ripping his hat off and screaming that it was the worst call he’s ever seen. He kicks some dirt, drops some F-bombs, and heads off the field hot. Elsewhere in the stands, a fan fakes giving a home run ball to a kid, keeps it for himself, and then we get a failed marriage proposal caught on camera during the game. She clearly tells the guy “I told you I couldn’t do this” as the broadcast awkwardly zooms out to show the absurd scene around them. Finally, Nolan Arenado gets ejected for arguing a bad strike call, and Oli Marmol comes out swinging, telling off the ump who’s barely started his big league career. It’s a perfect storm of MLB chaos.
