Luis Arráez vs. five infielders, a breakdown

With the bases loaded in extra innings and one out, the Rockies tried a risky defensive shift against the Marlins. They brought in a fifth infielder, leaving right field completely uncovered. Players scrambled into position, with infielders sorting out who would step in and the left fielder shifting far over to cover left-center. The right side of the outfield was left open, a decision that Luis Arraez immediately noticed.

Arraez stood in the box, saw the defensive setup, and understood the hole in right field. The first breaking ball came in the zone and he drove it exactly where no one was standing—into right field. It was a walk-off single as the Marlins sealed the win. After the hit, Arraez got doused with water from what looked like a double-barreled water bottle celebration, catching a full soak across his back and neck. The strange five-infielder setup didn’t pay off for Colorado, and Arraez made them pay for the gamble.
