The Brewers and Yankees were locked in a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 10th, with Milwaukee still working on a combined no-hitter. After a walk to Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees had runners on first and second with two outs, and Anthony Volpe at the plate. Volpe turned on a 98 mph fastball and drove it deep to right, but Sal Frelick tracked it down at the warning track to end the inning. It wasn’t just a great catch, it was a violent one. Frelick and center fielder Joey Wiemer collided hard. Frelick smashed his face and elbow, bleeding from both. Wiemer whipped his head around on contact and looked shaken.
Despite the crash, Frelick held on to preserve the no-hitter and send the game to the 11th. His grab broke part of the outfield scoreboard as he tumbled to the ground. Teammates and the bench went wild. Yankees players were stunned. Volpe stood staring. The Brewers pitcher turned out of his delivery instantly, fist-pumping before checking if Frelick was okay. Frelick didn’t seem to mind the blood. He stayed in the game and laughed it off. Wiemer walked it off too, though he looked rattled. Judge came over from center and joked with Frelick afterward, warning him not to run into someone his size. The game pushed on, still scoreless, still hitless for the Yankees.
