Japan used a lot of fake bunts to throw off the pitcher, but Venezuela stuck with the plan. A sharp ground ball to short led to one out, but the fielder fell awkwardly while trying to turn a double play. Both players shook it off with smiles and thumbs up.
With one out and a runner on first, Japan worked deep counts and battled at the plate. A huge 3-2 check swing sparked confusion, but the umpire ruled no swing. Now there were two on and one out with pressure mounting. Another wild pitch let runners advance, putting the go-ahead run in scoring position. A sharp grounder to short forced a do-or-die throw home. The shortstop delivered a beautiful one-hop strike to get the tying run at the plate. No celebration yet. Japan’s three-hole hitter came up looking for something outside. He got it and lined it into right. The Venezuelan right fielder charged hard and made the catch to seal the win.
